The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and distinctive occasions – not its most crucial, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. In the course of multiple weeks, the US president began displaying everyone his intentions for an ornate dance hall two times larger than the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the eastern section to build it.
He has committed acts ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of fatalities due to his slashing to USAID stands at 600,000 and growing, and recently an analysis predicted his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have attempted – genuinely, no former commander would have contemplated – solo demolishing significant portions of the executive mansion to build a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of some of the richest Americans, the majority of whom conduct transactions with the government.

As disorienting as it is to observe the chief executive attempt to overturn the old idea about democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion within America who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts close to half – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have witnessed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we grew up with into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of affection into a symbol of animosity who endorses specifically the brutality that he denounced in biblical teachings; this has happened more gradually, through multiple decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless unsettling in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.
A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold
So let me first describe the Jesus that I grew up with, since in theory Jesus is the center of Christian religion, and given that the rapidly expanding group within America could have minimal awareness about him since they are skeptics or agnostics or nones. I have no problem with these different approaches, nor with different religions; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of great price in the Christian story.
It is decidedly absolutely not the story of a mighty king appearing; instead, an infant arrives to parents without shelter in a garage, who need to rapidly escape to another nation to escape undercover officers. The infant develops in humble circumstances, an employed craftsman; his doctrine focuses on affection for others, particularly for the disadvantaged – not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and sheltering. Jesus' answer to aggression is to present the other cheek – not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a way to instruct the aggressor; his approach to wrongdoing is that if a person pilfers your outer garment you must offer the person your additional clothing also.
The evident and straightforward reality that the Savior of the gospels requests a kind of profound affection centered on the needy has perpetually caused the Christian faith somewhat of a controversial faith: attractive to the general public, but because of its intrinsic extremism needing to be controlled. In the 1950s it was contained via weakening – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Battle for the Finest Among Us
Therefore I have felt heartened to observe the persistent defiance against Trump emerge during the previous year. It has served as great solace to help build the initiative that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and seems to have inspired voters to turn out in numbers in interim political contests. We will need to continue it, and in the same spirit, with American flags during all protests and calls to the finest aspects in US history.

America is best defended, essentially, through connection to the highest in US heritage, similar to Christianity is optimally secured through connection to that which renders it special and wonderful, particularly the pattern of the Savior. In both situations does it imply pretending the most negative of both America and Christian faith did not happen; it means both humility and faith, a combination that committed US believers should embrace.
