The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
