Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.

This included trying to remove his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could facilitate a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said data from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the protest called by his son.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his health and for the return of democracy in our country."

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be permitted to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of leading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plan which encompassed plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing the former president's case.
