A minimum of thirteen individuals lose their lives and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The official announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in public works. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a full safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
